Program Description
This fellowship provides comprehensive training
in both the surgical and medical management of anterior segment diseases.
The objective is to prepare highly motivated ophthalmic surgeons
in an academically rigorous and clinically intensive setting, enabling them to become leaders
in their field. Graduates of this fellowship will have the skills and confidence to enter
either private practice or academic environments with a strong foundation in anterior
segment care.
The course is divided into four phases of six months each,
with structured evaluations at the end of every phase.
Phase 1 (0–6 Months)
- Basics of OPD Workup: History taking, refraction,
examinations, investigations, and management approach.
- Case presentations: Once every fortnight
(minimum 10 presentations compulsory).
- Wet Lab & Observation Training:
ECCE training and initial surgical exposure.

- Lens anatomy and physiology
- History and refraction in cataract patients
- Slit lamp examination, 90D and indirect ophthalmoscopy
- Corneal topography and keratometry
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Gonioscopy, HVF
- Ophthalmic Ultrasound (A-scan and B-scan)
- IOL power calculation
- ECCE techniques
- Work-up of cataract patients
- Research methodology, proposal writing, and topic presentation
Phase 2 (6–12 Months)
- Diagnosis and management of common pathologies.
- Case presentations: Once every
fortnight (minimum 10 presentations).
- Phacoemulsification surgical training.

- Surgical steps: Rhexis, hydro dissection, delineation
- Phacodynamics
- IOL insertion, irrigation, aspiration, and closure
Phase 3 (12–18 Months)
- Diagnosis and management of common pathologies.
- Case presentations: Once
every fortnight (minimum 10 presentations).

Program Overview
The Comprehensive Ophthalmology
Fellowship is the flagship course of MDEH. It offers a
complete range of medical and
surgical eye care, with special emphasis
on cataract surgery with lens implants.
In the latter half of the fellowship, candidates may choose to gain
focused exposure in subspecialties. The program combines:
- Technical instruction in modern methods of eye care
- Extensive clinical experience
- Full-spectrum patient care responsibilities

- Clinical evaluation, use of investigations, medical
treatment, surgical intervention, and research
- Detailed patient evaluation using logical and
clinical data for accurate diagnosis
